The Toronto Blue Jays select Tucker Toman with the 77th overall pick

The Blue Jays have selected Tucker Toman with the 77th overall pick.

This pick will definitely be an over slot pick, as Toman was ranked as the 35th best draft prospect available. Toman has also been linked to the Blue Jays for a while, but it is quite surprising to see him picked 77th overall instead of the 23rd overall.

Hammond shortstop Tucker Toman is off to a hot start this spring and he’s really been impressing scouts with his on-field leadership too. Most expect him to slide over to third base. He’s got suitors at the back-half of day one. No doubter from last night. #MLBDraft pic.twitter.com/WbsGXPMXMy

Toman is a switch hitter who is proficient from either side of the plate. He has better bat speed on the left side and can barrel balls quite well.
The third baseman uses all sides of the field, but has gotten out of his approach before pulling the ball. With that being said, he definitely has the bat speed and strength to hit for both power and average.

It’s also noted by Baseball America that there’s been times where Toman has had poor swing decisions. He has an open stance with a toe tap, but the Jays have been known not to mess with high schooler’s swings (i.e Bo Bichette). He’s viewed as one of the better prep hitters for power and average.
His defensive home is a little less clear, as he could play third base, but end up at second or even a corner outfield. Below are his grades from MLB Pipeline.
Hit: 55
Power: 50
Run: 40
Arm: 50
Field: 45
Overall: 50
He’s committed to Louisiana State, but it seems unlikely that he won’t sign with the Jays as it was announced before the Josh Kasevich draft.

Tucker Toman of Hammond has agreed to the 77th pick of the second round held by the Toronzo Blue Jays. The HSSR is live at his draft party.
