Hyun Jin Ryu tossed a gem, the bats teed off on Matt Harvey, and, though Trent Thornton made things interesting, Tyler Chatwood came in and closed the door in the ninth. 7-4 Blue Jays. Never in doubt.
Things worth mentioning…
Sunday’s game was the first very, very good Hyun Jin Ryu start we’ve seen in quite a while. He went seven innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits and one walk while striking out four. In order to find a game in which he made it through seven innings, you have to go all the way back to May 18th against the Red Sox. Between then and now, Ryu had posted a 4.91 ERA over five starts, so it’s great to see him pitch like the Ryu we all know and love.
The star of the day offensively, oddly enough, was Reese McGuire, who went four-for-five with three doubles. His OPS shot up from .642 to a respectable .759 thanks to that showing at the plate. Boy, you love to see Reese crank it all over the place, don’t you?
